Ah that's awful! And he never mentioned he was ill.
He didShit just saw it on RIP. That's tragic. Don't think he mentioned anything about having cancer.
I think he wasn't making a big deal out of itOh yeah, just found this
The Cancer and Parasite Thread.
I'm in this battle now guys looks like I'm in the fight of my life now only two months after losing my commanding officer I order corporal @Myles O'Reilly back to sarsfields and if he refuses he is to be shot at dawnwww.sarsfieldsvirtualpub.com
I must have missed that.
Very sad. Reading his posts it seems he was resigned to his fate.
I remember watching the Super Bowl with him, the one before last I think. Now there would no chance of me normally speaking watching the Super Bowl, but I knew that he liked American football (and was knowledgeable about it, unlike me) and I thought, feck it, I'll stay up and watch it with him, the two of us posting back and forth here during it. I enjoyed it, it was like watching the game with a mate even if we weren't in the same room.RIP Saul
All too easy to forget there are real folk behind our silly online avatars.
A (Katie Taylor) filthy scumbag and disgrace to the Irish flag
I cannot say, but will check later. I had a man break a bone in his leg campaigning for me.His last noble act was donating to Val
When he announced his cancer he was really saying goodbye to us all at the same time,He was one of those steadfast members that made this site such good company. A man who knew his own mind and was true to what he believed in whilst retaining a generosity of spirit that was certainly the envy of me, if not many others here. We need a good deal more of his sort, not one less.
May he rest in peace.
With the campaign going on I did not know he was ill. If I had known, I would have posted encouragement. I have a poster up in Scotstown village. When he announced his cancer he was really saying goodbye to us all at the same time,
and i detected the prognosis was hopeless in his message .
it seemed a little sentimental at the time but i told him most people on this site are good people behind the daft commentary and we would help him in any way we can --he has only to ask .
over time wiser people than i have taught me never be afraid to make a fool of yourself and ALWAYS offer help even if it seems naive to do so .
i am glad he had this site to bare his soul and test the waters now and again --i live in rural Ireland and there is not an address where i can converse like Sarsfields and be given access to videos and ideas i would never otherwise see .
i know this site was a comfort to him and when he announced his republicanism and his republican address to us he was writing his epitaph in a sort of a way as it will not fit on his tombstone what he treasured in life .
we are glad we knew him and his passions expressed here freely in this republic known as Sarsfields .
RIP Marcus .
Shit, I wouldn't want to live with that. Not having a go at you, you've given your (regettable) reasons. When he announced his cancer he sent me a PM wanting to talk. I was on a daft two week Boycott of the Site at the time after a fall out with Aul Lad so I didn't respond.
I would have to agree with @AUL LAD, without being fully explicit about it, he did more or less tell us that he had it and that the prognosis wasn't, well, good. Also for some reason I thought he was just spooked over a small cancer like a stage one thing that would just need some skin removed or something.
I regret not answering his PM. But I'm glad Dan reached out and contacted him via FaceTime. That makes me happy.
He was my favourite poster.
Tommy Brennan I think was the PE teacher in my old school, died early 80s. Sounds like the same person. RIPYes I hope so. I haven't had any direct experience, but I remember my late father telling me about his brother in law who died of cancer in his early thirties. He was an All Ireland cross country runner, the fittest of men. Didn't drink or smoke. His family would be well known in Dublin, the Brennans from Ringsend. Ger Brennan, the former Dublin footballer and current Louth manager would be his nephew.
Anyway, my father told us about visiting him in St Luke's hospital and being taken aback by how frail and wan he appeared. Unfortunately he was many months there before he passed.
I really hope it was quick and relatively painless for Marcus. And @Declan is right, funny how when we see photos of the people behind these avatars, they never really correspond to how we think the person would look. For some reason I imagined Coal as a heavy set, rugged country lad, the kind you might find in a small pub in the sticks of Monaghan.
Yes, the Student of Year award in Colaiste Phadraig is named after himYes that's him! Iirc he was a teacher in Lucan.
