Over the last couple of months I've been detecting a bit of a climbdown over electric cars, the response to the car carrier fire was particularly instructive.

Rather than the MSM either keeping it quiet or rushing forward to reassure that all was good about li-ion batteries igniting and burning the hell out of ferries or channel tunnels, there was much tut tutting and joyous blaming of EVs for starting the fire when that is by no means certain what happened.

EVs are complete waste of time, money and resources and are more widely recognised as being totally impractical. Then there is the killer punch as far as governments are concerned, and that is billions will have to be spent on upgrading the infrastructure to cope with the extra demand. What we as drivers actally want doesn't come into it, it is the money that needs to be spent on the grid and extra generation capacity that counts.

I fear though, that it might be a little early to celebrate, for instead of controlling our movements by rationing electricity the plan has switched to simply locking us down anyway in the name of the 'Carbon crisis'.

Yes agreed, but that is in the way EV's are proposed. In fact EV's are a wonderful vehicle to have available, depending on circumstances. Remember the ole milk deliveries by Float? And they could carry the weight too, waaayyyyy back then
So we know that EV's are good for some purposes in some locations, now it's only a matter of making them practical, cheap and easy to operate.
It takes a broadminded approach to visualise the possibilities, some roads need refitting Etc, Etc & Etc.

These are another option which sell for €3000 in China . . .

So perhaps it's a matter of redesignating the EV altogether and taking it down from its luxury item pedestal and making it a commonly available choice to ordinary folk and businesses in the city and quiet country towns would have them too no doubt

The CEO of Ford is also on record as saying that car manufacturers, other than Tesla, have huge software problems because they are buying bits of programmes here and there and trying to get it to all work together, whereas all of Tesla's software is in house.

The other great plan was that EVs are built in obsolescence on stilts. When the battery is buggered it won't be worth replacing so cars will have a shorter life and so more will be sold leased, as they will be far too expensive to buy outright, we are seeing enough of that now with PCPs being flogged by every dealer. Quite how that fits in with the latest 15 minute city wheeze is unclear, but the car manufacturers will, I feel, be a bit peeved by the idea.

Lead acid are far safer, but havn't the energy density. LI-ion batteries are Li-ion batteries, no matter what the make of car.

They are but they should not be seen as or enforced as a replacement for ICE vehicles, just a convenient option to choose from.
All depends on the application.
Seems to me that in Ireland the EV enthusiast views the subject similar to how Apple-fanboi's choose a phone/computer, they'll seek out cutting edge spec. of an amazing superior brand and nothing else exists for them.
For the rest of the world any old thing is still producing fantastic results

Norwegian energy group Statkraft has acquired a portfolio of wind farms in Ireland from London-listed investment firm TRIG (The Renewables Infrastructure Group) for an undisclosed sum.

The farms, with a total capacity of 35 megawatts (MW), are located in various sites in the Republic.

“It is anticipated that the assets, some of which began operating in 2000, could provide repowering opportunities in the future,” the company said, making Statkraft one of the first renewable energy companies in Ireland to begin repowering (replacing the older turbines) older wind farms.

“We see that onshore wind farms are already making a significant reduction to the cost of the current high electricity prices and reducing Ireland’s greenhouse gas emissions. Expanding our portfolio in Ireland is a key part of our strategy to develop, own and operate renewable energy projects, so we look forward to operating these assets in the future.”
