Nearly 20 years after the State bought Thornton Hall, the Justice Minister says there will be another review to see if it is a suitable site for a new prison.
The 150-acre site in north Dublin was bought in 2005 for €30million with a view to building a prison there. It was supposed to become
Ireland’s first super-prison but has lain vacant since its purchase.
There have also been reports that the site may be used by the Department of Integration to temporarily house immigrants.
There has been an increase of more than 1,000 prisoners in the country’s jails since 2019, but the number of additional spaces has only increased by 43, according to prison officers.
